Okay so as women who mountain bike we understand we need our shorts to provide protection – but can we get a little style and function – please?!
The good news is. They are finally here. Gone are the days of trying on the sad selection of women’s mountain bike shorts that just felt like they made smaller versions of men’s shorts and said “good enough” –
Because now there are mountain bike shorts that not only provide ample protection, function and breathability – but they finally have STYLE.
My old mountain bike shorts I would change out of as soon as I got to the resort because they were baggy and tight in all the wrong places. You know how many times I got called “buddie” or man on the trails? Well – since upgrading my shorts. I’m now called m’amm (I don’t know if this is actually better lol)
BUT..
At least I know those hard earned feminine glutes and thighs I work for on the trails and the gym are being recognized (I think haha!)
Okay so here’s my short list of the best mountain biking shorts for women that FEEL like yoga pants- but offer function and protection with the right materials in all the right places.
Did I mention their high rise and stretchy in the waste? Okay. Here goes!
I went to an all women’s bike lesson with Shred Sisters recently and noticed almost everyone in the lesson was wearing these shorts. I needed to know what the hype was – so I went to my local bike shop and tried them on. I had no intention of buying them because I have a million bike shorts. However, the fit and feel was awesome and when I stepped out of the change room my husbands immediate “YES” had me sold.
They are mountain bike shorts that feel like yoga pants in the waist but offer protection in the legs with more robust material in the legs. They also have breathability built in so they make for great gross country or downhill mountain bike shorts.
There’s no button or velcro – so you’re not going to have your shorts come open the second you sit down on the chair lift. Plus they won’t wreak havoc on your other clothes in the washing machine when the velcro comes undone!
These are by far my favorite mountain biking shorts because of the fit and feel of them. Maybe this is a TMI but my backside looks better than wearing lulu lemon pants in them – haha!
After my sudden realization that we can find mountain bike shorts that fit snug, are stylish and made for women – I ventured out to find more shorts. Because what woman doesn’t need more mountain biking shorts?
This is where I discovered the brand Shredly, and their Limitless collection with CURVY options! Similar to the Troy Lee Luxe Shorts – they are soft, have no buttons or Velcro and come in an array of colors. Not only that thought- you can pick your length which was probably one of my favorite things about them. When i’m doing XC mountain biking, I don’t always want a longer short so the shorter options are a great alternative. Plus I have short legs – so long shorts sometimes look a little silly on me.
These shorts are so stretchy that they conform to almost any shape- without feeling restricted or like you can’t breathe.
The colors are unbelievable. Instead of black and pink – there are pages and pages of different color options. Definitely one of my best finds for women’s specific mountain bike shorts!
I’m a sucker for a light woven pant or short. I love the weightlessness of them and you can pretty much find me wearing under armor joggers year round for any occasion. If you’re not familiar with what woven is- think the weightlessness and quick dry material of wind pants when we were kids. Just add in breathability- haha. Which is why I love the Terry Metro Bike Shorts.
While they don’t look stetchy at first glance – the woven material is absolutely stretchy and with the relaxed fit it truly feels like you’re wearing nothing.
The best part? They come with a removeable chamois inside! So you’re definitely getting the best bank for your buck with these shorts.
